Mississippi Car Insurance Requirements: What 25/50/25 Means (and Why It’s Rarely Enough)

Every Mississippi driver is required to carry auto liability insurance, and the minimum is written as 25/50/25. It’s the cheapest way to drive legally. It’s also one of the easiest ways to end up personally owing money after a serious accident. Here’s what those numbers mean.

What 25/50/25 means

NumberWhat it covers
$25,000Injuries to one person in an accident you cause
$50,000Total injuries to everyone in that accident
$25,000Damage to other people’s property, like their car

Liability pays for damage you cause to other people. It doesn’t pay to fix your own car or your own medical bills. And driving without insurance in Mississippi can lead to a fine and a suspended license.

Why the minimum rarely covers a serious accident

Think about what’s on the road on I-10 or Highway 49: new pickups and SUVs that regularly cost more than $25,000. If you cause a crash that totals a $45,000 truck, your policy pays $25,000 and you’re responsible for the other $20,000. Injuries are worse. A single hospital stay can quickly blow past $25,000, and anything over your limit can follow you through a lawsuit, wage garnishment, or a lien.

How much liability should you carry?

A common starting point is 100/300/100, especially if you own a home, have savings, or have a good income to protect. The cost difference between state minimums and higher limits is often smaller than people expect. If you have significant assets, an umbrella policy can add $1 million or more of protection on top.

The coverages the state doesn’t require, but you probably want

  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist: protects you when the other driver has no insurance or too little. In Mississippi, this one matters a lot. Here’s why.
  • Collision and comprehensive: required by your lender if you finance or lease. Comprehensive is what pays if your car floods during a storm.
  • Medical payments: helps with your and your passengers’ medical bills, regardless of fault.

The bottom line

25/50/25 keeps you legal, not protected. If you have anything to lose, ask for a quote at higher limits and compare. You may be surprised how little the difference costs.
